The Damned Progress Pt 8

The final work in progress for now until I can do some more painting and photography.

Another top kit delivered from this Kickstarter is the artillery pieces, equivalent to the 40K ordnance kits.

Each frame allow for the building of either the artillery piece shown or a quad launcher type weapon. The crew come from the same sprue as the heavy weapons so the arms are a mixture of both ordnance and heavy weapon compatible.

Additionally, the kit comes with 'clean', non-spiky shields so they are suitable for all of the Death Fields factions if one is after an option for those units. I may divert one to the Bulldogs models I have ready in the wings.

The Damned Progress Pt 7

The Brutes.

An absolutely brilliant box set.

Leaning heavily (purely in my own opinion) on the heretic Siege of Vraks Ogryns from Forgeworld.

I've opted for three distinct types. Ripper Guns, shield and close combat weapon and two handed weapons.

Each Brute squad is led by a model constructed using the Brute parts from the Command frame.

I still have some more to build with each squad consisting of at least five models by the end.

The Damned Progress Pt 6

 The Beastmen.

What sort of The Damned or even 40K The Lost And The Damned wouldn't contain Beastmen?

I'll have to work on the photos but I won't be in contact with the models for a couple of weeks whilst I'm away working.

There are a fair few options with this modular set. I've built the six from one frame using the double handed weapons with the other three having the pistol and combat weapon option. The frame comes with a riot shield option for the left arm that can be combined with a right handed sword or axe. Unfortunately, there isn't an option for right handed pistols although the riot shield could be converted for right arm use.

This frame is the best option for pistols and swords if a gamer wants to have standard humans kitted out with them.

The Damned Progress Pt 5

 The Beast Handlers.

These, at present, have no 40K style Lost and the Damned equivalent but we'll have to see how they pan out for Death Fields Arena.

Again, nice models. Four beasts and four handlers per frame. Again, these are nice and modular and if one was after variety, the gads will easily fit any other Damned model and, likely, any other Death Fields model should other teams be able to use beasts in their roster.

The Damned Progress Pt 4

As previously mentioned, I was looking at creating a Senior Officer/ Army leader type model using the Command frame.

In the end, and to prove the modularity across all of the frames, I have given the Commander a tasty axe from the Beastmen frame. I also opted to use the add on face grill to the helmet, a part I haven't used on any other leader so far.

Additionally, I have included two of the Psykers/ Sorcerers also available from the Command frame. One has the book where the other one has had what I think is optional flames glued onto the upraised hand.

The Damned Progress Pt 3

I'll focus more on troops once I have some more painted although I have completed the first twenty strong squad for The Damned infantry.

For now, here's a small grouping of the squad leader plus the comms operator built using the parts from the Command sprue.

What I am a big fan of though is the heavy weapons. Each frame provides three tripods so three full teams can be built although with a different weapon mount on each. Of note, the crew frame has one seated, one kneeling and two standing crew members. Dependent on how gamers want to construct the teams, there could be an issue with not enough of the seated gunner being present.

As noted previously, I have built these 'incorrectly'. The single leg should be to the rear and this allows the actual gunner to be seated rather than squatting down as I have them. Future painted builds will have been constructed correctly.

The Damned Progress Pt 2

Next up, a Command Squad plus the first of the Heavy Infantry based on the Blood Pact.

I may have ended up with a few too many Command frames but that gives me more options to use those models as squad leaders rather than as a Command team.

Based on Imperial Guard we have the Standard Bearer, Medic, Senior Officer, Comlink/ Voxcaster and a veteran with plasmagun.

To make the Officer stand out, his armour has been painted with Nazdreg Yellow for a gold effect.

I have been experimenting with the frame, including creating an overall Army Commander but there are some limitations with a lack of chunky close combat weapons or pistols. The Beastman sprue does offer some axes and MAC10 style pistols.

The finalised first squad of Blood Pact shown below.  I do like the weapons but lost patience with the power cables so have left them off.

I've started a second squad but they are constructed with just the lower face mask/ unhelmeted head variant on the frame. As a reminder, there aren't enough heads to make all the squad the same unless you combine multiple sprues.

The Damned Progress Pt 1

I've been away for a couple of weeks enjoying some relaxing travelling but this upcoming series of posts are the progress I achieved before setting off.

First up, five of the ten Outriders or whatever The Damned call their cavalry. Nice models with my only reservation being the scale of the mounts. Not necessarily 'heroic 28mm' scale but I'm more than happy with the result.

I'll work up more photos for a final army shoot at some point but there is still some construction and painting to take place.

I Do Still Buy GW Products

As I am still catching up after a near two year enforced break from being able to seriously progress with hobbying, there are a fair few models in the backlog.

Apart from The Damned, one of my priorities was introducing the jump pack Captain to my Howling Griffons.

Love the model and I enjoyed reacquainting myself with the quartered paint scheme. There are two squads of jump pack Intercessors to link up with him as well.

The Damned Alternate Builds Pt 2

As part of my freebie frames, I opted for the Death Fields upgrade sprue. This gives me alternate heads and weapons to bash with Damned infantry.

As a result, Space Damned Prussians or something.  These are painted with Leviadon Blue and  so far, there's another thirteen to go.

The Damned Alternate Builds Pt 1

I might, just might, have gone in too big with this Kickstarter. The 15 box pledge along with all the freebies has given me a lot of plastic.

As such, not all of the models will be built the same. I have plenty of scope to play around and go a little bit freestyle.

The first of my alternate builds are a plain old vaguely heretical warband. These use the helmeted heads rather than the hooded, mask heads.

The colour scheme is basic using the Contrast Gharak's Sewer for the uniforms and Ratling Grime for the armoured parts.

The Damned Beast Handlers

I'm not sure there's a 40K equivalent unless the Vraks Lost And The Damned list had beast handlers but we'll see how these pan out in Death Fields.

There are four beasts per sprue along with the handlers.

I've tried a couples of schemes and have tried to avoid red so far.

My favourite is the Contrast Akhelian Green skin with Dark Angels for the plate parts.

Oooooh! Fancy Backdrops

Nothing new for today but, seeing as I've not used them, here's a quick test shot of models using one of the scenes from the Jon Hodgson series of backdrop books.

I quite like them.

Once I'm back home, I'll be looking at some of the beast handlers and Beastmen from the Kickstarter.

Plus, twenty Krieg Death Riders as I catch up with the box sets from some time back.

The Damned Brutes

Another component of The Damned is their Brute squads. The Death Fields already have an Ogre/ Ogryn type squad known as The Vain. These models are made up from the Fantasy range Landsknecht Ogres and uses the sci-fi weapons on the sprues. I have used these in the past to make Ogryns for my Ventrillian Noble army.

These Brutes are pre sci-fi and borrow heavily, to my mind, from the Chaos aligned Ogryns from the Forgeworld Siege of Vraks range.

For now, I have three distinct squads on the go. Ripper guns, close combat weapons and two-handed weapons. Each is led by a Brute built from the Command frame but mix and matched with Brute parts.

Easy to build and painting up quite well with Contrast paints, I've managed to make more progress with these than any other squad so far.

So far, The Damned are shaping up quite well.

The Damned Heavy Ordnance

Another nice kit. I'm awaiting some 100mm bases to turn up to make them GW equivalent.

Again, no instructions so there is some dry fitting required. Unfortunately, there is only one limber per sprue so only one weapon can actually be made but there are some nice conversion bits after.

There are two types of shield included with two variants of each.

The cannon gun should have narrow gap shield rather than the wide gap for the quad launcher but I can't seem to make the barrel fit in that gap.

As can be seen, the shield comes in plain and "The Damned" style so these could be used with other Death Fields armies without looking out of place. One may be diverted to some spare Les Grognards for example.

There are also lots of spare diorama bits, like the pile of shell casings to take up some spare space on a 100mm base.

The Damned Heavy Weapons

As Wargames Atlantic have gone for a full range for The Damned from the Kickstarter, there are heavy weapons and ordnance as well.

These are the first ones I've built but there is a heavy disclaimer here. I have built them, strictly, incorrectly. This will be corrected on future versions but my excuse will be that, as a ramshackle looking army, some weapons have been jury-rigged from damaged weapons.

My squatting gunner can actually be seated if the correct longer rear leg is used and the little stools on the sprue are glued on. Think 2nd Ed Imperial Guard Heavy Bolter gunners.

These two are 40K Heavy Bolter and Autocannon equivalents. I do like the double barrel on the autocannon.

This mortar feeds on from the novel looking mortar that originated with the Les Grognards set.

Energy weapon (lascannon or plasma weapon?) and a missile launcher.

There are Ordnance weapons as well but those will be for another post.

I have no complaints with these. The crew model sprue is separate and also includes parts for the figures to be ordnance crew.

These being built incorrectly is due to WGA not providing build instructions for the models. That's not a real issue and, if it helps keep costs down, all the better.

If anyone reading buys the upcoming The Damned army box, research the website and box to ensure 'correct' builds.

The Damned Infantry

The backbone of any army, the Poor Bloody Infantry.

Now, due to the size of my pledge I have 180 of the male Damned available PLUS several sprues of the female soldiers. I plan to mix and match these and, as an example, the flamer operator here is from the female sprue. Slightly smaller but that shouldn't affect mix and matching the arms to provide extra variety.

For this squad of twenty I have opted for the hood and respirator heads but already have another squad of ten built with helmets. These will be in a different uniform scheme.

First thoughts? Relatively simple but with plenty of variety. See if I'm saying that in 100 models time.
